West Cambridge Real Estate
West Cambridge encompasses several neighborhoods and includes the typical range of singles, multi-families, condos and townhouses. Much of the Old Cambridge Historic District is in West Cambridge, along Brattle Street, and includes some of the city’s most famous houses. The street is nicknamed “Tory Row” for the residents who were loyal to the English crown. General George Washington was headquartered on Brattle at Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s stately residence. A National Historic Site, it is open to the public.
South of Brattle, between Harvard Square and Route 16, is the Half Crown-Marsh Neighborhood Conservation District. Special permits and zoning restrictions often required in historic and conservation districts. Within and beyond these districts are some outstanding examples of period architecture from Colonial and Federal through the embellished Victorian era to the sleeker modernist styles.
Neighborhoods include the “Larches” at the western border, across Route 16, and “Huron Village”, a nickname for the community around Huron and Concord Avenues, which include shops, restaurants, markets, cleaners, and a yoga studio. To the south and west, the “Coolidge Hill” neighborhood is bounded by the Charles River, Route 16, and the famous Mount Auburn Cemetery.
